UNIT 3: THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM

UNIT 3 THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM

INDEX

 1. THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM

            1.1  THE SKELETON
           1.2  THE MUSCULATURE
           1.3  TYPES OF MOVEMENTS

1.      THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM

The locomotor system is responsible for carrying out the muscular responses created by the
nervous system. These responses create movement.

The locomotor system is made up of:

                1.1  The skeleton

The skeleton holds up and shapes the body and it protects some delicate organs, like the brain or heart. It's made up of:

Bones that are hard and rigid organs.

Joints that are the unions between two or more bones.

Cartilages that are more flexible than bones .They protect the joints and create flexible structures like the ears.

                  1.2.-The musculature

The musculature is made up of all the muscles in the body. Tendons attach muscles to the bones.

Muscles are responsible for movement . They can contract and relax.

                  1.3.-Types of movements

There are two types of movements:

Voluntary movements, respond to an order from the brain.

Involuntary movements, respond to an order from somewhere else :spinal cord and brain stem.

ACTIVITIES

1.- Define the following words: bones, joints and cartilages.

Bones: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Joints: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Cartilages:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2.- Fill in the gaps.

The _______________________ is made up of _____________ and _________________.

The skeleton is made up of ________________ , __________________ and ____________________.

Voluntary movements respond to an order from __________________ .

Involuntary movements can respond to an order from ______________ and ____________________ .

3.- Could you write two examples of involuntary movements? Why?

THE FIVE SENSES

THE FIVE SENSES.
SIGHT
The eye is the body ´s organ for the sense of sight. The eye is made up of the eyeball and protected by the eyebrows, eyelids and eyelashes.
When light reaches the eyeball, it goes through a hard transparent layer called the cornea. Then it goes through the pupil which is the opening of the iris. The light passes through the lens which focusses the image on the retina, a layer at the back of the eye. The information gathered by the retina travels to the brain through the optic nerve.
Difficult words:
-      Eyebrows          - eyelids       - eyelashes  - layer  - gather
HEARING
The ear is the body´s organ for the sense of hearing. The ear has three parts:
-      The outer ear: it is made up of the ear and outer auditory canal. It gathers sound.
-      The middle ear: it is made up of the eardrum and a chain of small bones. They change sounds into vibrations.
-      The inner ear. It is made up of the cochlea and the auditory nerve. It changes vibrations into nerve impulses that go to the brain.
Difficult words:
-      The outer ear         -Middle ear  - eardrum     - Brain
TOUCH
The body´s organ for the sense of touch is the skin. The skin has three layers:
-  Epidermis: it is the outer layer. Its function is to protect.

-  Dermis: It is under the epidermis. It has the receptors of cold, heat and preasure.

-  Hypodermis: It is under the dermis. It has fat that protect us from damage or the cold.
SMELL
The body´s organ for the sense of smell is the nose. The receptors of smell are in the pituitary, a structure inside the nostrills.
TASTE
The body´s organ for the sense of taste is teh tongue. The receptors of taste are in the taste buds. There are receptors for different flavours all around the tongue: salty, bitter, sour and sweet.
